The U.S. Department of Defense signed agreements with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection AI to deploy AI hardware and models on its classified networks (IL6/IL7) for lawful operational use. This follows earlier deals with Google, SpaceX, and OpenAI, and is part of a strategy to avoid vendor lock-in after a legal dispute with Anthropic over unrestricted military use of its models. Over 1.3 million DOD personnel already use GenAI.mil, the Pentagon's secure generative AI platform. Anthropic refused the Pentagon's terms over autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance concerns and is currently in litigation.
DoD's IL6/IL7 classified deployment requirements represent a distinct technical surface area — air-gapped or strict-access cloud environments with no standard API endpoints. If you're building for government contractors, the tech stack just got more defined: Nvidia hardware, Microsoft Azure Government, and AWS GovCloud are the cleared layers. Reflection AI's inclusion signals the Pentagon is betting on newer model providers, not just incumbents. Standard consumer AI integrations won't port here — this requires FedRAMP High or DoD IL certifications.
