The UK government launched a $675M venture fund to back homegrown AI startups, offering capital, supercompute access, and visa support.
The UK government launched Sovereign AI, a $675M venture fund led by James Wise (Balterdon Capital) and Joséphine Kant (ex-Y Combinator). The fund targets domestic startups across model development, agentic AI, and drug discovery. An initial investment was made in Callosum, while six startups — Prima Mente, Cosine, Cursive, Doubleword, Twig Bio, and Odyssey — each received up to 1M GPU hours on UK supercomputers. Portfolio companies also gain free visas for international hires and government procurement pathways.
Six startups just received up to 1M GPU hours each on UK national supercomputers. If you're building in the UK and need compute to train models or run simulations, this is the cheapest path to serious infrastructure — public cloud equivalents would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
If you're a UK-based developer building a model-dependent product, check whether your startup qualifies for Sovereign AI's compute grant before the next allocation round closes.
